Ambien (zolpidem) is a sedative-hypnotic medication that can be taken by people suffering from insomnia. You may be prescribed this drug if you have trouble falling asleep or staying asleep. Ambien works by calming down your brain areas responsible for sleep and helping you wake up well-rested after 7-8 hours. An overdose of Ambien is dangerous and needs to be reported straight to your health care provider. The following symptoms will need to be reported to your doctor if you get them after presumably taking too much of Ambien: slowed breathing, coma, slowed heartbeat, and drowsiness. Always take there exact dose prescribed and avoid taking Ambien for longer than recommended (usually for 7-10 days). Side effects of Ambien include diarrhea, weakness, headache, changes in appetite, stomach pain, muscle aches, heartburn, eye redness, drowsiness, constipation, dry mouth, gas, and dizziness, and there is no need to report them to your doctor unless they continue for several days. More serious side effects must be reported right away and can include symptoms that interfere with your everyday life.
